Reminder: wash your hands before you start cooking

Ingredients:

Rice: 

1/2 cup             Rice

1.5 cups           Water


Daal:

1/2 cup             Toor dal (Pigeon peas)

1 cup                Water

1 tbsp               Ghee

1 tsp                 Cumin Seeds 

A pinch             Asafoetida

3-4                    Curry Leaves (chopped)

1 tbsp               Cilantro (chopped)

Salt to taste

This is a variation of Varan Bhaat (daal rice) is quick easy meal that takes 20 mins of active attention between prep and cooking time. It's one of my go to meals on a cold day or when I want to feel grounded and rooted in simplicity.

Method:

Daal:

  1.  Wash the daal 2-3 times and drain the water

  2. Add  times the water as daal, salt to taste (start with 1/2 tsp) and asafoetida.

  3. Pressure cook (4 whistles) or 15 mins in an Instant Pot. 

While the daal is cooking get the rice going. Cooking time varies depending on the type of rice used.

  1. Wash rice 2-3 times and drain the water.

  2. Add 3 times the water as rice

  3. Cook on medium gas for 10 - 15 mins checking whether it is cooked.

  4. Drain excess water

Tempering the daal:

  1.  Once the daal is cooked, warm up a small pan

  2. Add ghee; once it's warm add cumin seeds, curry leaves.

  3. As soon as the cumin seeds brown add cilantro \.

  4. Immediately pour this on the daal.

Meal is ready!
